4 ways to Feel happy with yourself and learn to love the person you are
Arguably one of the most mind boggling and confusing things of the peri menopause and menopause phase is the sense of loss of self. The feeling that you have lost who you are and feel a bit unsure of where you fit in. In your 20s, life is one big adventure, you’re having fun finding your way but you feel confident in your youth. You have a right to be, because you’re young and hopeful. But as you get older that starts to wane a bit. Yes you may be a mum, a wife but as a person you wonder am I still considered young? Am I now considered old? Or am I somewhere in-between.
The sense of what should I wear that’s appropriate for my age, can I still go out dancing? if I can even find somewhere age friendly! We should listen more to how we feel about ourselves rather than listening to societal views on what is deemed fitting for someone our age. Some people refer to it as aging gracefully or disgracefully, but I think it’s more about learning to be happy with who you are and actually liking or loving yourself as a person.
1) USP – Your unique selling point is YOU. The best thing about being you is there is no one else like you. Not a soul. Take confidence in that and own it. The key to being happy in yourself is not worrying about what other people think and focus on you. The happier you are with yourself, the more confident you will feel and the more people will be drawn to you and your energy. It’s the philosophy of what you give out you attract back. If you exude positivity and a feeling of being confident in who you are, you will be more open to what life might bring your way, it’s not arrogance it’s contentment, the feeling of all that you are is enough.
2) Realize what your core strengths are.
What makes you different to everyone else. A good way to discover this is by asking 5 friends, family or colleagues, people who know you well, independently of each other, what they think 2 or 3 of your main strengths are. What they like about you as a person. It can be quite an eye opener and it is intriguing to know how other people see you and whether there are some common denominators in there. You can then draw on these strengths and celebrate them as part of your uniqueness.
3) Recognize your personal achievements
Think about all the achievements you have made in your life be it, successful career, raising children, helping friends and family, whatever it is dwell on that for a minute and recognize how proud you feel of yourself for doing this. It’s a good feeling. Think about how inspired your 20 something yr old self would feel if you could share this with them. Personal achievements should be measured in how it made you feel, not anyone else, or compared to anyone else’s achievements. They are unique to you and no one can take that away from you. You may look at someone and think wow they seem to have life sorted, but someone may be looking at you in the same way. The point being that different achievements mean different things to different people and therein lies their importance.
4) Celebrate who you are
Understand that with age comes wisdom and experience. In some cultures when women enter the menopause they are celebrated as someone who is in their prime. They have achieved great status and are held in great esteem. The menopause is a time to embrace your body’s evolution and celebrate the woman you have become. It signifies a new beginning, a doorway to freedom and a deeper self-connection. Everything you have done in life has enriched you as a person. The highs, the lows and everything in between, you are who you are because of the life you have lived. It is a good place to be and is something to take confidence from. It has been said many times if only I knew when I was young, what I do now. The beauty of knowing it now is it makes you more rounded as a person. You have come of age, you’ve grown into yourself and now you can take what you’ve learned and rediscover what ignites the fire in your belly. Recognize your power and enter this new phase of life with experience, wisdom, contentment and knowing yourself better as a person. It’s a good time to be alive!
